Night Ripper
Pittsburgh-based Girl Talk absolutely detonates the notions of mash-up, cramming this 40-minute mix with layered samples from more than 150 uncleared top 40 pop bangers, electro anthems, indie classics, yacht rock flashbacks, 80s metal cuts, and more.
The idea of building a pop record out of stolen pieces of other pop records dates back as far as novelty singles like Chubby Checker's "The Class" and Dickie Goodman's "Mr. Jaws," and lately the art of mash-up has gotten so refined that DJs can craft songs that bear almost no resemblance to the songs they're sampling.…
Such is not the case with Night Ripper, however, which, thanks to Gillis's ability to draw from a myriad of musical sources (the names of the artists used, though not their songs, are listed in alphabetical order inside the liner notes, and in fact make up the entirety of the liner notes), can appeal to anyone who's heard the radio (particularly rap radio) in the past few years.
