Savage Hills Ballroom
The piercing clarity of Youth Lagoon’s third album, Savage Hills Ballroom, feels like a reaction to the muffled bedroom ambience and warped kaleidoscopism that defined Trevor Powers' earlier collections. He worked on the record with Ali Chant, who co-produced Perfume Genius’ similarly glammed-up and streamlined third album Too Bright.
The latest from Trevor Powers expands his sound while dwelling on dark topics.
Boise, Idaho-based D.I.Y. singer/songwriter Trevor Powers steps outside, geographically speaking, for the first time on his third studio long-player, the stark, soulful, and often strident Savage Hills Ballroom.
Much was made of Youth Lagoon's sheltered psychedelia almost immediately. Fat Possum's quick trigger finger led to the release of Trevor Powers' official debut, The Year of Hibernation, and the album landed on most Best Albums lists by year's end.
Powers is blessed with one of the more appealingly idiosyncratic voices in indie rock, a kind of eunuchoid Appalachian warble.
