XXXTENTACION Presents: Members Only, Vol. 4
It’s the fourth installment in the running compilation series from XXXTentacion’s group Members Only, but the first since the South Florida rapper’s 2018 murder—and as you might imagine, the mood across its 24 tracks is one of general despair. Still, that’s fairly in line with the outlook of Jahseh Onfroy as he lived, translating depression and grief into rap and grunge songs from the heart of darkness; to say that the harrowing allegations of abuse further complicated his cult-hero status is an understatement. Posthumous verses from Onfroy are scattered like ashes here amongst grimy horrorcore and bruised emo from affiliates like Craig Xen and Ski Mask the Slump God, and titles like the icy “Fall in Love with Death” hit uncomfortably close to home. It’s a sustained effort in the myth-building of an antihero, a story that branches toward tragedy in all directions.
