Snarling, deeply satisfying rock from the Scottish rockers. The band’s slick first three albums don’t feel like ample preparation for this. *GLA* is the sound of a band unleashed. Opener “Gold Elephant: Cherry Alligator” is everything its title isn’t—compact, unfussy and intimidating—and it sets the tone. The band’s pop sensibilities aren’t totally quelled, however. “Ex El”, “I Am Alive”, and “Whispers” all marry their newfound rough-edges to soaring, potent hooks.
