Camella Lobo\'s solo project Tropic of Cancer shares nothing with the Henry Miller novel of the same name besides an interest in the sensual ends of bohemia. Here she delivers a debut album, *Restless Idylls*, after years of singles, EPs, and contributions to compilation albums. The eight new recordings made in Los Angeles, with additional production from Karl O’Connor in New York and London, capture a dark, mystic electronic haze, where love and desire, hope and existential doom go hand-in-hand in the struggle to make it through the eternal night. Tracks such as the David Lynchian “More Alone,” the early Cure adaptation “Court of Devotion,” and the Eno-minimalism “The Seasons Won’t Change (And Neither Will You)” bring together elements of 4AD goth with shoegaze and electro-ambient styles. Despite the threatening horror of the title, “Children of a Lesser God” is on more of a spiritual quest with its muted beats and gentle synth waves. For greater unease, try the foreboding “Wake the Night.”
