Torito’s “Fabric Scraps”, building on 2014’s EP “C.R.E.A.M (Crushing Rhymes, Eviscerating All Matadors)” and 2016’s collection of singles “Select Joints”, showcases the bull-masked rapper’s best work to date. Meticulous multisyllabic rhyming is still the method of delivery for Torito’s oddball humor and brazen commentary, but this project builds a more personal story on that foundation, revealing greater depth and detail in the leather-faced spitter’s jams. The album, which Torito produced with support from longtime collaborator Johann Sebastian, features guest verses from Quelle Chris, E. Grizzly, Zilla Rocca, ialive, and Darko the Super. “Fabric Scraps” demonstrates greater cohesion, both musically and lyrically, than Torito’s previous work. In the vein of DOOM, Aesop Rock, Homeboy Sandman, and Open Mike Eagle, Torito has honed his rapping; on “Fabric Scraps”, his rhymes trek into new territory and delve deeper into the familiar (raising children, retrospective ambivalence toward his own childhood, the Worker’s place in a society that frequently devalues Labor, the ever-increasing ludicrousness of present-day America). With Torito’s lyricism over instrumentals that draw from Art Tatum, Django Reinhardt, Bunny Wailer, Father John Misty, and more, each track shines on its own while woven into the larger tapestry of the album. The “Fabric Scraps” album release show, on Saturday, January 13th at Lava Space (4134 Lancaster Ave, 19104), features Torito, Lt. Headtrip and the Karma Kids, JE Double F, Sol Patches, Ronnie Vega, and The Hell Hole Store. A music video for the song “Glowing Clothes” debuts in early January, with videos also in the works for “Golden Briefs”, “Ensueño”, and “Gangrenous Digits”. Torito is planning two tours in support of the album, both with Darko the Super: the U.S. Southeast in late Spring, and the U.S. Northeast in Fall.
