In the early 2010s, as hip-hop’s spotlight shone brightly on Chicago, a number of especially young artists emerged as critical favorites and potential new school leaders. The then-teenage Tink outmatched male and female competitors alike with drill-informed bars and R&B promise on her *Boss Up* and *Winter’s Diary 2* mixtapes. Having spent the past few years in a high-profile major label arrangement, she transitions back to independence, ready to fulfill her potential. Her first full-length project since 2016, *Voicemails* showcases her artistic growth into early adulthood. In between entertaining interludes in the spirit of the album\'s title, she grapples with relationship drama on “Different,” trust issues on “Stabbed in the Back,” and soon-to-be-requited love on “I Wanna Be Down.” Her fellow 2015 XXL Freshman DeJ Loaf joins in for “Ride It” as a rare and remarkable guest on a record otherwise rightfully dominated by the talented Tink herself.
