John Darnielle's latest is a meditation on loss, inspired by the dissolution of a romantic relationship, and in its own way is as dark and brutal as his gut-wrenching 2005 album/memoir The Sunset Tree.

Coming off of the two strongest, most fully realized -- and most harrowing -- albums of his career, in particular The Sunset Tree, which helped bring him to the attention of a larger audience, John Darnielle (who's somewhat better known as the Mountain Goats) took something of a career digression with a record that, while retaining the production clarity and expanded instrumental palette of his 4AD output to date, marked a clear withdrawal, if not in quality, certainly in scope, from its phenomenal predecessors.

Like all Mountain Goats albums, of course, there are some gems.
