Future Lovers - E.P.
The Beaches may be named for the genteel East Toronto waterfront neighborhood from which they hail, but as this five-song EP reaffirms, their heart belongs to the city’s wilder West End scene. Equal parts garage-rock sneer and New Wave sass, *Future Lovers* plays like a night on the town with the girls, as they infiltrate the high-end nightclubs and drug-dealer SUVs of the King West district on “Blow Up” while revisiting local trash palace the Bovine Sex Club to flip off the punk-rock boys who gave them unsolicited career advice on “Let’s Go.” “It’s a song about our experience as a band growing up in Toronto, and desperately wanting to make it in the industry,” guitarist Kylie Miller tells Apple Music. After an epic evening of condo parties and illicit hookups, *Future Lovers* offers a plea for Sunday-morning redemption with “You Don’t Owe Me Anything.” But what begins as a churchly confession ballad eventually blossoms into an unapologetic celebration of living by your own rules, suggesting that The Beaches only want to cleanse their souls so that they can do it all over again.
