Tess Parks sings years above her age, with a rasp that suggests Marianne Faithfull lurking somewhere in her bloodline. Yet the Canadian singer/songwriter, who spent many important years in London, follows her own muse, which takes the psychedelic haze of Mazzy Star and matches it with the hypnotic intensity of Tara Angell (or, if you prefer a better-known name, Lana Del Rey). There\'s a sense that being signed to 359 Records (the new label of Creation Records boss Alan McGee) has gotten Parks\' music to sound like what it’s to be. “When I Am Young” features thick beats and wailing guitars that wouldn’t sound out of place next to McGee signings such as Oasis and My Bloody Valentine. The slow and methodical “Walk Behind Your House” progresses like a PJ Harvey blues into another dimension. “Goodnight Love” would be an acoustic blues in someone else’s hands, but Parks keeps the electricity on and lets the song swing beyond any genre.
