Made Up Mind
A half-decade after forming in 2010, the road-seasoned Southern boogie band led by spouses Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks has coalesced into a terrifically expansive unit. An 11-member core ensemble digs into serious, brassy funk in tracks like “Misunderstood” and “Part of Me,” while ballads like “It’s So Heavy” and “Calling Out to You” excavate gorgeous depths of soul. There’s plenty of hot jamming too—as Tedeschi sings of water rising in “The Storm,” Trucks’ wah-wah guitar floods over organ toward an almost Middle Eastern groove.
