When a supremely talented songwriter ends a relationship, we’re in for one meaty album. Sarah Blasko’s 2009 commercial and critical breakthrough is honest and raw, but never wallows in self-pity. Written while she scored a production of *Hamlet* and recorded in Sweden, it’s sparse and beautifully proportioned, with an emphasis on piano, acoustic instruments and jazz elements throughout. “We Won’t Run” is an especially powerful anthem, while other songs thrive on defiance. *As Day Follows Night* is impossible to pigeonhole, but it’s beautiful through and through.

For her third album, the eclectic Australian Sarah Blasko took her sound even further than before.
