Rob Zombie’s D-grade horror-movie universe gets deeper, richer, and weirder with each album. Made between movie shoots, *Warlock* mixes violent, glammy metal with queasy synths, bits of movie dialogue, and Zombie’s inimitable—if unintelligible—bark for a sound as slick as oil and corrosive as acid. Only one of the tracks here even clears three minutes, making the songs feel more like surrealistic vignettes in a long, bad trip. As always, Zombie’s priorities are clear: sex, drugs, and monsters, together if possible, as on the highlights “Well, Everybody’s F\*\*\*ing in a U.F.O.” and “In the Age of the Consecrated Vampire, We All Get High.”

Rob Zombie’s music career often feels completely separate from his cinematic endeavors. This disconnection is curious, especially because the sinister-meets-schlocky vibe of his solo records is a perfect complement to his horror movie work. It's debatable whether Electric Warlock is a superior album to its predecessor, Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor, but frankly after the career nadir of the latter any sign at all that Rob Zombie once again gives an actual shit is a step in the right direction.
