When *Trap Cake, Vol. 1* dropped back in 2019, Rauw Alejandro wasn’t yet the Latin music superstar he would eventually become. At that point, the Puerto Rican singer had made his name in reggaetón and trap as part of the then-burgeoning R&B wave. Now, having proven his pop mettle with hits like “Todo De Ti” and “2/Catorce,” he returns to the series with the added benefit of his subsequent fame. That said, this second installment is no retread, but rather a forward-thinking set that firmly situates him in the Latin trap vanguard. No less than Future himself accompanies him with beast mode bars on “FCK U X2,” while Ty Dolla $ign pops in for some no-strings hedonism on “NO DRAMA.” From there, he test-drives a drill-meets-rock hybrid on “GRACIAS POR NADA” and trades off with rising rapper Ankhal on the booming “WUEPA.”

The Puerto Rican singer’s EP is a mix of robot soul and trap beats that sound like he’s just having fun making expensive-sounding records.
