Tremendous Sea of Love
Originally uploaded in batches to YouTube and later self-released through Twitter, *Tremendous Sea of Love* finds Michael Angelakos pushing further away from convention and into his own bubble of bold, confessional electro-pop. As with all Passion Pit’s albums—and as this one’s title suggests—*Tremendous* exists in all caps, a toylike explosion of synths and helium falsetto that swings between extreme self-doubt and extreme self-acceptance. Ironically, it’s the album’s mellowest moments—“You Have the Right,” the rainbow R&B of “Hey K” (written for Angelakos’ ex-wife)—where Angelakos sounds most content, while his brightest moods (“I’m Perfect”) ride the human line between everything coming together and everything falling apart.
Released for free on Twitter, the fourth Passion Pit album is a different kind of confessional for Michael Angelakos, who's rediscovering the joy of process rather than the satisfaction of product.
