On his debut EP, Omar Apollo plays funky, jazzy songs that demand to be heard beyond his bedroom studio. The self-taught Indiana singer/songwriter shows a soul pedigree and understated flair that belies his 20 years. His slow jams are artful and untethered from convention (“Ugotme,” “Lucky”). On “Hijo De Su Madre,” Apollo plays off the Archie Bell & The Drells’ “Tighten Up” guitar riff and adds cowbell, raps, and soft falsetto hooks. It’s an outrageous combination that speaks to his immense talents and excellent taste.
