Australian duo Oh Pep! may have cut their teeth on plucky folk tunes, but their debut album makes a bold leap to accomplished indie rock and radio-friendly pop. Yet for all the playful risk-taking here, there’s also a pervasive air of cool, confident craftsmanship—just look to the jittery pulse of “Bushwick” and the snappy beat of “Happenstance,” which help catapult charismatic songwriting and sudden structural twists into a dizzying array of colors. Even better is “Doctor Doctor,” a synth-buzzing anthem worthy of Tegan and Sara.
Stadium Cake is the first full-length album by Australia's Oh Pep!, though the duo of Olivia Hally and Pepita Emmerichs have been at it for several years, both on the festival circuit and, with three EPs under their belt, in the studio.
