Survivor's Guilt
You’d be hard-pressed to find a gangsta rapper who hasn’t lost comrades along their ascent, but few have mastered articulating the unique brand of torture that is living well without the people you knew to be integral to your being the way Sacramento MC Mozzy has. When you hear him confess on “Not the Same” from *Survivor’s Guilt*, “It’s nothing you can do to bring my n\*\*\*as back—and I just want my n\*\*\*as back,” it takes everything in you to stop yourself from trying to reach through the speakers and give him a hug. As an MC, Mozzy’s always worn his emotions on his sleeve, and yet with *Survivor’s Guilt*, they seem somehow heavier than ever. It’s a project rife with reflection, regret, and the utmost reverence for the many individuals he wishes he could share the good life with. It’s a cruel irony that success for those who don’t come from means usually brings about shame for surviving situations friends and family didn’t, but it’s a concept that has always informed Mozzy’s art. The hope with a project like *Survivor’s Guilt* is that it provides long-deserved catharsis and that the MC is at some point able to utilize that unmistakably gravelly delivery to rap about how proud he is that he’s beaten the odds.
Through blunt lyricism and melodic delivery, the veteran rapper’s first album for Yo Gotti’s CMG label opens up about trauma and mental health.
