Monster Magnet’s major-label debut gave mastermind Dave Wyndorf the means to realize his wildest sci-fi stoner-rock fantasies. In contrast to the basement-dank sludge of old, the sinister jangle of “Cyclops Revolution” opens up a 3-D soundscape of echoing incantations that summon a seismic fuzz-riff eruption. But as far out as he ventures, Wyndorf always remembers his roots: “Evil (Is Going On)” beefs up Willie Dixon’s blues standard into a brontosaurus-sized boogie, while the cover of Hawkwind’s “Brainstorm” outfits the proto-metal rager with extra jet-engine thrust.
Having already shown that the world of drug-damaged early heavy metal-meets-space rock was well within their capability, Wyndorf and company took things to an even crazier level with Monster Magnet's major-label debut, Superjudge.
