Orbit, a three-disc compilation of music for solo cello composed between 1945 and 2014 by an impressive array of composers including Elliott Carter, Luciano Berio and Salvatore Sciarrino, is all performed by world-renowned cellist Matt Haimovitz. Orbit is the second release in the Pentatone Oxingale Series, in which Pentatone joins forces with the Grammy® Award-winning Oxingale Records, a trailblazing artist’s label founded in 2000 equally committed to offering noteworthy, distinctive interpretations of both canonic repertoire as well as works by recent and living composers. This release documents the cellist’s musical journey since the turn of the millennium, together with his partner in life and music, composer Luna Pearl Woolf. Its contents, nearly all the solo contemporary recordings initially released across five Oxingale albums between 2003-11, is augmented by two newly recorded tracks: Philip Glass’s Orbit and a new arrangement by Ms. Woolf of the Beatles’ Helter Skelter. Fifteen of the twenty composers represented are still living, and ten of the works are represented in first recordings.
