Night Passages

Sparked by the effects of a career-threatening illness, clarinetist Martin Fröst fuses memories and music in this atmospheric and varied recital. Each piece, stunningly arranged—and performed alongside pianist Roland Pöntinen and double bassist Sébastien Dubé—finds roots in significant episodes in Fröst’s life, from moments before birth to encounters with great musicians and cherished memories of family. The trio’s beautiful transcriptions of Baroque music form the essence of this moving album. Its playful surprises include a traditional Scandinavian polska, two beautiful pieces by the late jazz pianist Chick Corea, and a glimpse of one of Fröst’s heroes, jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman, in the form of Gordon Jenkins’ poignant “Goodbye.”
