Humanista
"Humanista" | the second full-length album by Mart Avi. Could be filed under: *post-pop/outré *light-hearted yet distant *somewhere, over the borderlines W I R E: "What is most immediate about Mart Avi's debut release Humanista is its strong visual character, tinting Art Deco colour schemes and foliage with the overcast, gothic mood of Tallin's cityscape. That combination makes and unexpected setting for Mart Avi's unnaturally low vocals, which are as eerie and operatic as those of The Associates' late Billy MacKenzie. The Visitor features Avi's strongest vocals, driven by the slurred, almost glam rock stomp of a bass drum. Another point of interest is Digital Glass Dream, with its chanting not too far off David Bowie's on Subterraneans. The latter half of this album uses diverse instrumentation and sampling, including snapshots into distorted telephone conversations and sound clips from films. What with its original, well developed visual art style at the forefront and analogue-style soft synths played at an off-kilter pace, Humanista doesn't appear to belong to any obvious musical trend - not even in Tallinn." Beehype: "Humanista, the second full-length solo by fearless master of sound and vision Mart Avi ranked number one on the most influential local end-of-year listomania of Estonia’s biggest weekly Eesti Ekspress. Avi’s young ghastly baritone and sound experiments have been compared to Scott Walker, Billy MacKenzie, David Bowie et al, yet his readiness to find out wondrous entities and create self-mythologising cross-indexes is entirely his own. Slices of dub, industrial, cocktail grooves, abstract funk, and a sample from infamous “Always Coca-Cola” TV ad can be tracked on this gest into the realms of 30th century wave. Such swooning rush can be accomplished only by someone who looks at the world with rare curiosity." "In Humanista a way of cheating the time element can be found." - TheLastZine "My designer is not a dictator.
