Privateering (Deluxe Version)
*Privateering* collects just about all the sounds that Mark Knopfler has explored throughout his lengthy career—a musical Limoges Box of piercing blues, rootsy Americana, radio-ready rock, and even some Celtic music. The latter comes in on \"Haul Away,\" an earthy track with layered lyrics about a mysterious night at sea, while “Radio City Serenade” opens with the kind of sweet piano intro worthy of an Ella Fitzgerald tune, with horns and guitar soon joining in to reveal a tender, folky love song.
The album pits Knopfler’s guitar against a seafaring rabble of strings, flutes, and the occasional pennywhistle, and the result is far more fun than this arrangement might suggest.
Sometime after Dire Straits hit the big time, Mark Knopfler began to think smaller.
Mark Knopfler's seventh solo outing is a backwoods ramble through two discs of the rootsy Anglo-American sounds, writes Helen Brown.
