Matthew Field rose to prominence as the face and voice of indie-pop band Beatenberg, but has since released music under the simple moniker of M Field. His second EP *Re: M Field*, a collection and range of ideas and tempos, is filled with songs that find Field coming to terms with a newfound sense of self as he looks back, but also forward, towards the type of songwriter he’d like to be. From the epically poetic, muted elegance of singles “Hyenas” and “House and Leisure” (produced by Beatenberg bassist Ross Dorkin) to the organ melody preceding “Fire on Campus” and the deliciously quirky piano line of “Jolly Roger,” Field explores the depths of his creative cauldron with refined finesse.

7.5 / 10

The South African singer-songwriter’s artful pop is full of wit and revelation. His second EP is evidence of an artist blossoming into form.
