Mr. Skii
When Luh Tyler raps on “Been Working” that he’s never had a job, it’s not because he’s lazy. Rather, when the Florida rapper released his 2024 album *Mr. Skii*, he was still only 18 years old. Tyler hasn’t known anything outside of rap, having dropped his first singles in 2022 and immediately finding success. On his debut album, he aims to show that the early hype wasn’t a fluke, blending whispered flows, earworm melodies, and clever punch lines into a sturdy effort that touches upon a number of rap subgenres. Take “Met Gala,” which cruises along with the warm synths and offbeat flow of plugg music. “7 AM in Munich” twinkles with vintage keyboard chords and artificial strings that bring to mind the ominous trap music prevalent in Tyler’s home state. It’s no mistake that he invites his fellow Floridian Kodak Black onto the track, showcasing the ways in which these Gators do things differently. The album is anchored by pre-release single “2 Slippery,” which features Bossman Dlow and finds the two MCs bouncing off each other like two of their own fans getting rowdy in a mosh pit.
