Good Grief
*Good Grief* is built to make you move. The sophomore album from eclectic New Yorkers Lucius bubbles with kinetic energy. “Almighty Gosh” surges forth with frantic percussion and ’80s-inspired synths, while the explosive “Something About You” thumps along to an unforgettable chorus. But the band take a few breathers between the glitzy indie pop numbers (see: the dramatic “My Heart Got Caught On Your Sleeve” and folk-inflected, windswept “Dusty Trails”), making *Good Grief* as well-suited to your living room as the dance floor.
The Brooklyn band Lucius has been a stylish presence on the tour and festival circuit for the past few years. The quintet’s sophomore album sounds like everything at once but nothing in particular.
There are at least three completely different albums fighting against each other here.
Jackson Browne set the standard for road songs in 1977 with “Running on Empty,” a tune (and album) about the contradictions…
Maybe hearing Lucius' "Turn It Around" on that one Samsung commercial 50 times around when the Super Bowl was broadcast reminded you of what an out-of-this-world, bona fide jam it was, and just how little it had to do with smartphones or football.
Proving an unexpected delight in 2013 with their outstanding debut ‘Wildewoman’, Lucius return with a confident and exuberant sophomore
