The name Miłosz Magin (1929-99) might ring a bell for Chopin aficionados because he recorded the composer’s complete piano works in the early ’60s. But for Lucas Debargue, an audience favorite at the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition, it is Magin the composer that he’s championing. Romantic in language, and with a delicate, quite French musical voice (he settled in Paris) featuring shades of Bartók, Magin will be quite a discovery for many. Chamber music as well as concertos offer a nicely rounded portrait, with performances of the highest caliber. And for Debargue’s enthusiasm for Magin to have captured Gidon Kremer’s imagination, he must be something special.
