The French electro wizards indulge their greatest prog-rock fantasies on this ambitious 2011 sophomore album. \"Horsepower\" gallops in with feverish metallic guitars and retro synths locked and loaded, and the duo\'s disco fever soon heats up on \"Civilization,\" melting the jarring crunch of their earlier work into Ali Love\'s synthesized (and slightly possessed) vocals. The funk fully forms among the layered, wavering harmonies and harpsichords of \"Ohio,\" while sticky dance grooves sizzle with bursts of Italo disco on the title track and \"Helix.\"
On their second full-length, the French production duo incorporates the brash sounds of late-1970s progressive rock. The direction is precocious, brave, and surprising even if it amplifies their weak points.

The four years taken to produce a follow-up to 2007’s † inevitably raises suspicions that Justice have been experiencing Difficult Second Album syndrome; and on first listen, Audio, Video, Disco does little to allay them. The French duo’s familiar crunching electro beats and chunky, stadium rock-influenced riffs remain here, but the ecstatic disco of the early material has been supplanted by more indulgent, wayward structures.

The Alan Parson’s Project on acid. That’s what I was thinking 30 seconds after “Horsepower,” the arresting opening track of the new Justice album—Audio, Video, Disco—started to pound its way out of my home stereo speakers.
