The Dark Night of the Soul

On his first solo EP, Swedish guitarist Jonathan Hultén displays a softer, unplugged side to the whirling-dervish persona he embodies onstage with metal stars Tribulation. The four tracks here have far more in common with Nick Drake and other mellow singer/songwriters than the towering, gothic dramaturgy of his day job. Songs like “Nightly Sun” and “Anguished Are the Young” feature crisp acoustic guitars and mournful lyrics while showcasing Hultén’s knack for memorable melodies.
