One of our First releases is “sleep like it’s winter” by Jim O’Rourke. Some may know his music from his albums on Drag City like his “Simple Songs” of 2015, or from his work as a producer for many varied artists. Even those who follow his music closely may be looking for a route that passes through his past works like “The Visitor” or “I’m happy and I’m Singing and a 1,2,3,4” that would lead them to this new chapter. No matter which route you take, “sleep like it’s winter” occupies its own space, a miniature curio cabinet that brings together his music throughout the years: synthesizer, pedal steel, piano and shortwave radio are his only tools this time, but it touches on all times and places, but most importantly, on now.
Jim O’Rourke doesn’t much care for ambient music, so it makes sense that his first ambient album picks apart the genre and scrutinizes its attempts to produce truly structureless music.
