Remember Who You Are

Music and spirituality are two concepts that often find themselves intertwined, forming a unity that connects to the very soul of a human. Through music, it is possible for the path of the ‘search’ into one’s inner self to be a clear, fluid experience. Gorazd, FKA Mojo Goro, has walked this path, taking him into the heart of India from where his debut EP on Nostro Hood System takes great inspiration, both aurally and spiritually. This influence is also shared with a developed intrigue for Bulgarian gypsy music that hails from the Balkans. Through his travels and exploration of his spiritual being, he remerges as Goro to continue his intrinsic search. This constantly evolving, infinite journey poses a thought – Remember Who You Are. A universal reflection of the true self. Gorazd uses his EP as a tool to demonstrate this very concept. The 5-track EP release commences with Pt. I of ‘No Plan’, on which Goro shares with us his voice alongside the traditional vocals of his teacher Sandeep Dalal, whom he spent 3 months with developing his understanding of the classical Indian style. The iconic Indian tanpura, cradled around synthetic frequencies, accompanies Sandeep’s vocal work. ‘Nagina’ elevates the energy, utilising a powerful reggaeton rhythm against a pungi – the mystical instrument of the snake charmer. Pt. II of ‘No Plan’ takes the melodic elements of its brother and couples them with drums undoubtedly inspired by the sounds of dancehall. On this we hear Goro’s voice once again, this time he harmonizes with himself, using a non-descript style of vocalism. Finally, the sweltering bassline of ‘Secrets Riddim’ rumbles amongst the vicious synth work, which is complemented by the striking hats and imaginative use of the cocking gun. On remix duties, Salviatek’s newest signee Superfície takes the swollen sound of Nagina and strips it back, resulting in a sporadic, baile funk-influenced stomper.
