Animals Remember Human
Arranged in 2018, Animals Remember Human is an ode to critically endangered birds and their habitats -- appropriately enough, with the National Audubon Society joining National Geographic and Cornell's Lab of Ornithology to declare it the year of the bird. Bringing together a trove of archival samples and lush field recordings, it's one of the most engrossing albums we've ever heard from the long-running German Army project. Sometimes haunting, sometimes weird, each track is its own vibrant little universe. Even more appropriately, in line with its deep themes of erasure and disappearance, the laptop used to make Animals Remember Human died just after the album was finished. #33 on Joyful Union Cassette Blog's Top 100 Cassettes of 2020 "The music rolls around your headphones like it’s meant to be there, checking out the place, figuring out where it’s going to sleep later on. It doesn’t take long to make itself at home, and you’re left fluttering from downtempo collage to bare-bones banger like they’re branches on the same tree. What did I tell you up there? This one’s for the birds!" -Cassette Gods "Focusing on endangered species and habitats, the eclectic mix from [German Army] reflects the variety in our own lives . . . movement or pattern[s] etched in time and space, reflecting an ever-changing world where birds are fearful of our existence but more scared of not existing themselves." -Cerberus "...deeply psychedelic electronics and field recordings." -Independent Music Podcast "...Animals Remember Human really made me fall in love." -Record Turnover "Immaginate i Cabaret Voltaire di 'The Voice of America' esiliati in una foresta tropicale o il Pop Group alle prese con la sonorizzazione di una pellicola 'mondo movie.'" -OndaRock "...mind warping." -Lost in a Sea of Sound Art/layout by Ben Zoeller Tape photos by Emily Dodson Shirt models: Antonio Pinson Zoe Murphy
