Evanescence’s 2003 debut album brought the crunchy power chords and brooding bombast of nu-metal crashing into a set of elegant, piano-driven ballads. The result was an unlikely gothic hard-rock breakthrough, as rousing in the quiet despair of “My Immortal” as in the propulsive, fist-pumping fury of “Bring Me To Life.” The combination of singer/pianist Amy Lee’s soaring, plaintive voice and guitarist Ben Moody’s muscular riffs made *Fallen* a unique pop phenomenon.
