To date, Emma Ruth Rundle’s stabs at crafting a musical identity have been tentative ones. Her previous solo material has been guitar-centric and mostly instrumental, but her new solo album is different. She not only sings, but she does so a lot—and when she does, she soars.
It should come as no surprise that Some Heavy Ocean, the debut solo outing from industrious California-based singer/songwriter Emma Ruth Rundle, engages in a bit of sonic flirtation with her myriad other projects, which include fronting the post-rock/psych-metal outfit Marriages, the folk-slowcore collective Nocturnes, and sending up plumes of guitar-fueled ambiance with post-metal heroes Red Sparowes.
In a similar vein to label-mate Chelsea Wolfe, there's a certain desolation and sparseness to Emma Ruth Rundle's sound that's both mysterious and alluring
