The U.K. five-piece’s second album soothes their frenetic punk charge into gothic mood pieces. There’s still plenty of angst and dissatisfaction in George Mitchell’s yelps and bellows but his band are more reliant on atmosphere than primal energy here. Black-clad ’80s alt-rock is their key touchstone – from “My Life in Rewind”’s intricate twang and jangle to the pulsing goth-rock of “Heads or Tails”, and dream-pop torch song “Velvet”. What remains is their ear for a killer chorus, not least on the swooping headrush of “Euphoria”.

Their debut LP vented disillusionment with hard-charging punk and shouted choruses, but on their followup, the Leeds band channel their misery through a soft-focus dream-pop shimmer.

Their debut documented pure, unrelenting struggle. ‘Ullages’ finds a way out.

Angry and vitriolic were handy adjectives for Eagulls’ 2014 self-titled debut, but this follow-up sees them immersed in shoegaze and gothy post-punk.

In the infancy of 2014, Eagulls arose from Leeds, England's thriving scene and set to causing havoc with their self-titled debut.

As its anagrammatic title suggests, Ullages aims for what remains in the post-punk canon.
