Roots Rock
The Bronx’s favorite son follows up a string of blues albums with his first rock ‘n’ roll record since 2003. The album isn’t totally sans blues—there are raw, righteous covers of Tampa Red’s “I Ain’t for It” and Lightnin’ Hopkins’ “Katie Mae”—but rawboned rockers dominate. There are also a couple of compellingly contemplative tunes co-penned by fellow Bronx boy Scott Kempner of Dictators/Del Lords fame, including the dreamy-but-streetwise title track, where Dion’s joined by another august New Yorker: Paul Simon.
