Maderna & Berio: Now, and Then

Twentieth-century composer Bruno Maderna was as passionate about music of the past as he was about composing works that defined his own age. Here, we get to listen to his transcriptions for modern orchestra of Renaissance and Baroque works by Palestrina, Gabrieli, Frescobaldi, Legrenzi, and Viadana. These are masterful, tasteful arrangements, and are performed with utmost clarity and sensitivity. The premiere recording of Luciano Berio’s *Chemins V* for guitar and orchestra provides the refreshing, atonal central act of an imaginative release.
