There Is Calm To Be Done
Dakota Suite have expanded their sound over the years; they started as another sadcore ensemble that took things slow and to heart and who\'ve found additional release in works with brass and woodwinds. 2014’s *There Is Calm to Be Done* is another collaboration with Quentin Sirjacq, who also recorded 2010’s *Valissa* and 2012’s *The Side of Her Inexhaustible Heart* with Dakota Suite’s Chris Hooson. The stand-up bass, acoustic guitars, and piano of “This Is My Way of Saying That I Am Sorry” and “In the Stillness of the Night” immediately bring together the archetypal Dakota Suite sound, with Hooson adding vocals, both sober and expressive. However, the wild “Committing to Uncertainty” and “Nu Dat Deze Dag Voorbij Is” explore instrumental dissonance that’s brought back to earth with the melancholy creep of “Dronning Maud Land.” “Ask the Dusk” and the album closer, “I Miss the Dust,” capitalize on serene piano moves that are more in keeping with the instrumental side of Dakota Suite.
