Gqom Oh! Records are proud to present their 11th release showcasing the past (esedlule), present (okwamanje) and future (ikusasa) of the DJ and producer Citizen Boy. Founding member of the Mafia Boyz crew (previously known as Dope Boyz), the 21-year-old Durban artist infuses the Gqom sound of the youth with traditional Zulu culture, having gained global recognition from the likes of Kode9, Kanye West and even Nike - soundtracking the recent global Nike Jordan campaign entitled UNITE: CULTURE. Born out of Durban's underground, Gqom Oh! Records launched in 2015 to introduce the music of Durban townships to a global audience. While the sound has since gained international attention, From Avoca Hills to the World sees Gqom Oh! get back to their roots. Using the Zulu word for each tense, the seven-track release guides the listener through Gqom past to present, with six brand new tracks from Citizen Boy and the Mafia Boyz, presented with a 13 track cassette-only retrospective mix. A reflection of where it all began, the title celebrates the labels humble beginnings and the young kids of Avoca Hills aka the Mafia Boyz. Making Gqom since 2012, when Citizen Boy and Novelity were just 13 years old, they now travel the globe as representatives of the scene - championing the darker, harder style of Gqom that Gqom Oh! Records advocate. Available digitally from February 21st but exclusively on badncamp from 31st of January , a limited edition run of cassettes (100 copies) featuring a mix and 13 track retrospective will also be exclusively available via Gqom Oh!’s Bandcamp page.
