Conor Oberst has never been afraid to take his indie-folk project Bright Eyes in unexpected directions, and this collection of odds and ends illustrates what a multifaceted songwriter he truly is. Distorted electro-funk nuggets like “I Will Be Grateful for This Day” sit next to noisy freak-outs like the Daniel Johnston cover “Devil Town,” but Oberst still leaves plenty of room for caustic folk strummers like “The Vanishing Act” and “Seashell Tale,” delivering that classic Bright Eyes dejection.
