Don't Think That
BlocBoy JB and his go-to producer (and fellow Memphis native) Tay Keith had been putting in work for years prior to *Simi*’s “Look Alive,” the Drake-featuring single that took their visibility to another level. In the time since, BlocBoy’s “Shoot” dance would go on to be co-opted by popular video game *Fortnite*, and Tay Keith would expand his collaborative résumé, most notably as a contributor to Travis Scott’s *Astroworld* standout “Sicko Mode.” *Don\'t Think That* finds the pair reunited on two riotous selections: “Club Rock” and \"Bacc Street Boys,” both exemplary of the contemporary Memphis sound they’ve spearheaded, and conjuring an acute sense of nostalgia in the wake of Tay Keith having diversified his collaborators. Along with a taste of the familiar, the EP explores uncharted territory for BlocBoy, as the MC stretches his singing voice to its limits at the beginning of “Crip Lit” and, again, in a slightly more reserved fashion on “Makavelli.”
BlocBoy JB has a habit of starting or promoting things that become more popular than he is. This seven-song mixtape is his attempt to combat that.
