Mercy's Cut
Bristol-based Bingo Fury releases his debut EP ‘Mercy’s Cut’ via Practise Music. Drawing from his already established sophisticated yet raw sound, ‘Mercy’s Cut’ scatterguns between stark, romantic noir ballads, frantic no-wave, and polished jazz. Opening track ‘The Phone’, is a beautifully wistful love song: ‘I just want to try to make it harder to tell where you end and I begin’. Lead single ‘Underfall Yard’ swells with fervour, with Bingo Fury’s world-weary vocals sitting atop off-kilter jazz and twitchy cornet solos. Track three, ‘Cash For Chloe’, is an electrifying fusion of wonky rhythms and romantic, pastoral lyricism, clattering into an knee-jerk improvised coda. Clocking in at just one and a half minutes, ‘I’m Not Tied’ is another poignant piano ballad, while ‘Mercy’s Cut’ ends the EP with a stirring closing-time jazz. Filled with rich, cinematic allure, the EP is both beautiful and unsettling and underlines Bingo Fury’s complete abundance of compositional ideas.
