Since taking over as Chief Conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2003, Mariss Jansons has created one of the finest ensembles in the world. The sound he prizes is cultivated, rich yet flexible, and capable of performing huge orchestral scores with a sure-footed feel for their architecture and structure. And few symphonies call on those skills more than Bruckner’s mighty Eighth, a vast, cathedral-like edifice of solidity, but also with moments of immense delicacy. This live recording from 2017, the first time Jansons conducted the work with his orchestra, is extremely impressive and stunningly played.
