Despite three years and a nearly life-ending bus accident separating *Purple* from 2012’s *Yellow & Green*, the resilient Baroness pick up where they left off. The album is an expression of their ever-deepening genius for folding metal and hard rock into delicately layered songcraft. “Morningstar” and “Shock Me” are rousing statements built from pleading howls, chugging beats, and serpentine guitars that consume their own tails. The influence of veteran avant-rock producer Dave Fridmann can be heard in the atmospheric keyboards that shade numerous cuts, including the heroically galloping “Chlorine & Wine.”

These are some of the biggest, strongest songs that Baroness has written; it's rock music that folds in their more metal leanings, along with something more delicate and spare. The hooks and melodies are their best.

It’s remarkable that Baroness is still a band, really. While on tour in England in 2012, only a month after the group released its mammoth double album Yellow & Green, the Savannah foursome suffered what seemed a fateful accident when its bus plowed through a guardrail and plummeted 30 feet. Fortunately all survived,…

Baroness' first outing on their own Abraxan Hymns imprint finds them plumbing the depths of the well of harmonic Southern-tinged prog metal they first tapped to enormous success on 2009's Blue, and yet further on the 2012 double album Yellow & Green.

Here it is, the Baroness album that almost never was. It seems impossible to write about Baroness' return without referencing their 2012 tour bus

Not everyone got on board with BARONESS's last album "Yellow & Green". However, most fans recognized it as one of the bravest albums the heavy underground turned out in recent years. Embracing more of BARONESS's space rock, trad metal, alternative, punk and Eighties rawk affinities, "Yellow &amp...

Purple stands to add every bit as many classics to the band's mixtape canon as any album they've produced thus far, including the more expansive Yellow & Green.

Back in force after their 2012 bus crash, the Georgians return with more giant hooks and elegant guitar interplay than ever

The bus crash that nearly killed the members of Baroness has been well documented, but a few odd details were obscured in the fiery remains, most notably how damn prophetic the band was in the months leading up to the accident.

Two and a half years following their near-fatal bus accident, Baroness return with the finest album of their career.
