The recording of the project took place during a seven day residency at The National Music Centre (NMC) in Calgary, Alberta (October 5th-12th). The CBC Searchlight partnered with the NMC to award the 2018 winner this opportunity. This allowed Aquakultre to record the album with the utmost quality, using historic instruments, soundboards, and microphones. This project represents our first release as a four-piece band. Legacy is about love, family, societal hardship, and making mistakes through life experiences, all told through the eyes of songwriter, Lance Sampson. Sampson and his partner Julia Hutt, who has contributed to the project through visual art, have started a family of their own. Hutt will take care of the album’s illustration and photography. Musically, the album touches on multiple styles and genres to relay each story. These include Rock, Country, Pop, Blues, Hip-Hop, and Soul. Aquakultre’s earlier releases have all been described as a foundation for a family. Legacy is the result of years of soul searching, self reflection, and life experiences. Sampson will pass this down to his children, to help them understand that they’re not alone. To help expand the meaning of Legacy, Aquakultre is involving mothers who are also artists. The artists collaborating and contributing to this project are Kordeena Clayton, Julia Hutt, and Lido Pimienta. All of these mothers raise their children passionately, while still finding the time to do what they love to do. It takes a village to raise children, and mothers are the foundation of the village. Aquakultre intends to pass the “Legacy” on.
